Swiggy, the food delivery platform poised for an IPO, has officially launched its ‘XL’ electric vehicle (EV) fleet aimed at handling large-scale meal orders. The service, which debuted on October 4, has already completed dinner, breakfast, and lunch deliveries in its first few days of operation.

The new XL fleet, consisting of around 20 custom-designed electric vehicles, has been in a pilot phase for several weeks. Swiggy formally introduced the fleet in Gurugram as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance operational capabilities. This move is seen as a key step in managing the increasing demand for large orders, especially during festive seasons and events.

In a nod to the Haryana Assembly elections, Swiggy’s XL EV fleet delivered 3,500 meals to polling officials at over 580 booths in the Gurugram and Badshahpur constituencies, providing the service free of charge to the District Administration. This initiative not only supported the local community but also demonstrated the fleet’s efficiency in handling bulk deliveries.

Sidharth Bhakoo, Swiggy’s National Business Head, highlighted the importance of such services in catering to large gatherings, noting that the fleet launch aligns with the growing demand for bulk orders. He also mentioned that the XL service is set to expand to more cities in the near future.

Swiggy’s competitor, Zomato, introduced a similar fleet in April 2024 to tackle logistical challenges related to large orders. CEO Deepinder Goyal explained that the initiative was designed to improve customer satisfaction by reducing the need for multiple delivery agents. Their fleet incorporates advanced features like cooling compartments and temperature-controlled boxes to maintain food quality.

With these advancements, Swiggy and Zomato are both ramping up their capabilities to cater to the evolving needs of large events and gatherings, promising enhanced customer experiences.
